12 maj 2022
SUHF, the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institutions, has repeatedly urged for the release of Iranian-Swedish academic Dr. Ahmadreza Djalali.
Dr. Djalali is a Swedish citizen, alumnus of Karolinska Institutet and a respected expert in disaster medicine. He was arrested in April 2016 while visiting Iran to participate in a series of academic workshops. In October 2017, Dr. Djalali was sentenced to death on espionage-related charges strongly disputed by both his academic colleagues and the international community. Since his arrest Dr. Djalali has been refused medical care despite his rapidly deteriorating health. On May 4, 2022, it was reported that Iranian authorities are preparing to carry out Dr. Djalali’s execution in the coming weeks.
SUHF is a member of the of the European University Association (EUA) and supports EUA´s call for Iranian authorities to immediately suspend the capital sentence issued against Dr. Djalali and to secure his immediate release.
